Hi all,
I thought I would introduce myself first, my name is Kyla Burke-Lazarus and I just came on board the CVNL staff as a new Americorps VISTA member. I will be taking over the logistics and project development for the Flex Volunteer Program. I grew up in San Francisco and just recently returned after going to school at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, where I studied biology and Spanish.
I had a great day yesterday, working with the kids from the Marin City Recreation Center. We worked with two groups of kids and with each group we started off reading a great book which commemorates summer, Summer Legs by Anita Hakkinen. Then each volunteer broke off with a small groups of kids to write a poem, taking inspiration from the book. We wrote about Summer Camp Legs and we described an activity the kids did the during their summer program. Me and group wrote about Sports, Arts, and the Fashion Club. The kids narrated and the volunteers were the scribes. It was a great day, the kids were wonderful to hang out and work with, and they all were super excited about the all the fun they had had this summer.
Now that summer is winding to an end and school is about to begin, we are hoping to get volunteers involved in helping to run an after school program so we can continue to hang out with these wonderful kids. I really recommend everyone who can to get involved, I had such a great time yesterday!
