Knit Your Part Afghans!

Our Knit Your Part Flexible Volunteer project has just completed two beautiful Afghans! There’s such a thrill, in watching a project emerge square by square and then to see the final product, a collaborative effort of knitters in our community using their skills to give back to the community. I have learned through the project that knitting is both an art and a craft. Knitting combines form and function without sacrificing either one and the Afghans we created serve as a true testimony to this – beautiful and practical! For the Knit Your Part project, volunteers met at Whistlestop, an organization which provides comprehensive and integrated services and activities for older adults and persons with disabilities in Marin County, to knit squares along side Whistlestop clientele. The squares became sewn into impressive Afghans; a kid’s Afghans sporting bright yellows and blues and an adult Afghan with dark, warm maroons and purples. The success of the project is attributed to the great stewardship of our wonderful Project Leader, Vicki, who taught many volunteers, including me how to knit, and to the committed efforts of all our Knit Your Part volunteers who knitted such beautiful squares.

We are proud to be donating the Afghans to the Fairfax-San Anselmo Children’s Center to help raise funds for their after-school program in their upcoming February raffle. Our Flexible Volunteer program helps supports their after-school program by providing volunteers to give the students at the Children’s Center help and support and we are happy we can use the crafted Afghans to support the mission of the Children’s Center in other ways. The Children’s Center provides early care and education to some of the most vulnerable and at risk low-income children in the community and they greatly appreciate the Afghans and the support our Flexible Volunteer program provides them.
